On paper, that sounds fine.

In the real world, a lot of Gen 4 truck owners end up fighting lifter failures, oil consumption, misfires, collapsed lifters, bent pushrods, and camshaft damage.

That is why DOD / AFM delete kits are so common.

But here is the part people miss:

Turning AFM off in the tune is not the same thing as a real mechanical delete.

If the engine still has AFM lifters, AFM trays, valley cover, oiling hardware, and AFM cam parts, you did not delete it. You only disabled the command.

That may be useful, but it is not the same as replacing the parts.

What Is DOD / AFM?

DOD stands for Displacement on Demand.

AFM stands for Active Fuel Management.

Can You Just Turn AFM Off in HP Tuners?

It does not repair a damaged camshaft.

What to Change in HP Tuners

Do not randomly turn off every DTC you see.

If the hardware is still present, you want the PCM to report real faults.

After a Mechanical AFM Delete

After a real AFM delete, the tune needs to match the new engine setup.

If you only replaced AFM lifters with standard lifters and kept a stock-style cam, the tune changes may be simple.

If you installed a performance cam at the same time, now you are doing a cam tune.

Idle speed
Base Running Airflow
Idle spark
Throttle cracker

Check mechanical health.

A tune cannot fix:

Do You Need to Disable AFM Before It Fails?

A lot of people do.

On a healthy Gen 4 truck, disabling AFM in the tune can prevent the PCM from entering V4 mode and may avoid some V4/V8 transition complaints.

But the AFM lifters are still in the engine.

Some owners run for years with AFM tuned off.

Some still have lifter failure later.

The only true delete is mechanical.

If the truck is high mileage, ticking, misfiring, or already showing lifter symptoms, do not expect a tune-only AFM disable to save it.

Loud ticking
Dead miss

Knock retard

Common AFM Delete Mistakes

Mistake 1: Thinking Tune-Only Means Deleted

Disabling AFM in HP Tuners is not a mechanical delete.

The AFM parts are still in the engine.

Mistake 2: Ignoring a Failed Lifter

If the lifter is already collapsed, tuning AFM off will not fix it.

Do not keep driving it and wipe the cam worse.
